I play bass in bands and have done for over 23 years, but my first love, musically speaking was electronic music.
If it was Germanic and shaped like an orange, I loved it and couldn’t get enough of it. Only one person in my life shared my love of this music however, and eventually I was drawn more towards the community aspect of playing in a band and sharing music that my wider group of friends and I had in common.
In the end though I realised there’s nothing wrong with being a hermit and shutting yourself away in a dark room with synthesizers (or these days their virtual equivalent) for days on end. Nothing wrong with that at all. Nothing.
A few years ago a bass student and friend of mine played me some more contemporary electronica and in that music I heard the same kind of sounds I’d heard as a kid… my interest was back. So yes, some kind of nostalgic hermit was born in me but it’s all fine. It’s all absolutely fine.
I love being around and working with the technology but I love the sound and the feeling that you can create with these instruments.
As the old saying goes; ‘have bass, will travel… have synths, will stay at home.’
Here’s a playlist of ideas I had fun with recently.
